Tylor’s UpLIFTing Story

The Home Builders Foundation (HBF) recently completed a project that included a bathroom remodel, door widening, new hardwood floors, and a vertical platform lift for Tylor, a 26-year-old Westminster resident.

On August 21, 2017 Tylor was involved in a car accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury, leaving him unable to walk. Tylor was admitted to Craig Hospital, where he received treatment, and on November 29, 2017, he was discharged to his home that was not ADA accessible. Unable to navigate his home, including getting in and out of the bathroom, and the house in general, Tylor reached out to the Home Builders Foundation. Looking back on this time Tylor stated “When I got home I couldn’t fit through the bathroom door due to my chair, so I was having to shower at the local recreation center”. After hearing Tylor’s story first hand, a dedicated volunteer of the HBF, John Keith of Harvard Communities picked up Tylor’s project. John worked with Doug Bauman of Latsis Custom Homes to complete the renovations for Tylor.

On March 22, 2018, the HBF installed a vertical platform lift (VPL) in Tylor’s garage, which was the final step to complete the project. With the VPL now installed Tylor can exit and enter his home. Tylor plans to use this VPL to enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather, saying, “I can’t wait to use my new VPL to get outside in the summer and play with my son. I plan on getting an adaptive bike for the summer, so I can ride bikes with my son. “Tylor is also using his VPL to get out and help the community.

Tylor works closely with an organization called PASCO, a community partner of the HBF, and in a few weeks he will be piloting PASCO’s phone tree program. A place where individuals can contact a person that has gone through a similar situation to theirs and have a system of support. Not only did the work provided by the Home Builders Foundation allow Tylor to move independently around his home, it gave him the opportunity to get out into the community and elevate the lives of those around him!
