Athena is a bright, creative, and determined teenager who lives with Freeman Sheldon Syndrome, a rare neuromuscular disorder that affects the development of her bones and joints. She also experiences scoliosis, tethered cord syndrome, a fused neck, and limited vision. Athena uses a power wheelchair and is fed through a G-tube, but none of that slows her down. She’s sharp, funny, full of personality, and affectionately known as “Bosslady” for her strong will and vibrant spirit.
But at home, Athena doesn’t have the space she needs to be herself. Because of the layout and limitations of her house, Athena isn’t able to use her power wheelchair inside. She has to crawl on her hands and knees from room to room, a painful and undignified reality that no teenager should have to face. As she grows older and her mobility decreases, this is no longer sustainable.
That’s where Home Builders Foundation—and you—come in.
Athena’s family purchased their home nearly a decade ago, but its small, 1950s-era design makes it nearly impossible for her to navigate. We’re building a custom home addition to give Athena the space she needs to move safely, access her daily routines, and enjoy privacy as she becomes a young adult.
The new addition will include:
This space will allow Athena to live more fully, not only at home, but in every aspect of her life. She’ll be able to spend time with friends, care for her service dog, and study in peace as she works toward her dream of becoming an attorney.
Home Builders Foundation sets aside funding for large-scale home modifications like Athena’s. These projects do more than improve accessibility. They allow children and others with mobility challenges to grow up safely, stay connected to their communities, and build their futures in the homes they love.
When you give today, you are supporting Athena and making it possible for other families to receive the life-changing modifications they need to thrive.
