Non-Cash Donations:
Creative Ways to Support HBF

At Home Builders Foundation, we know that giving looks different for everyone. While many of our supporters give generously through direct contributions, there are impactful ways to support our mission beyond writing a check. When you donate non-cash assets, you can make a meaningful difference while potentially maximizing your tax benefits.

Whether you’re a business owner, an individual, or part of a family foundation, your non-cash gift can help build independence and elevate lives for individuals living with physical disabilities.

What is Non-Cash Giving?

Non-cash giving includes gifts of assets other than cash, such as stocks, real estate, retirement funds, and more. These giving strategies can help reduce capital gains taxes, support estate planning goals, and often allow you to give more than you might with a cash donation alone.

Giving non-cash assets is one of the most tax-smart ways to give. It can help you:

  • Avoid capital gains taxes
  • Reduce your taxable income
  • Support estate or business transition planning
  • Make a larger impact than you might with a cash gift alone

Home Builders Foundation welcomes a wide range of non-cash gifts—and we’ll work closely with you and your advisors to ensure the process is simple, secure, and aligned with your goals.

Ways to Give Beyond Cash

Use the sections below to explore the types of non-cash gifts that can support Home Builders Foundation’s mission of building independence and elevating lives.

  • You’re required to take RMDs, but don’t need the income

  • You want to reduce your taxable income

How it works:

  • Follow the instructions in our giving portal to  request a QCD through your IRA plan administrator

Donate Real Estate or Business Interests

You can donate real estate such as residential properties, commercial buildings, or undeveloped land, or even closely held business interests. If you’re selling or closing a business, donating part of your ownership before the transaction is finalized can reduce capital gains taxes and provide a charitable deduction. These gifts offer meaningful tax advantages while supporting long-term impact in our community.

Why this might be right for you:

  • You own appreciated real estate or a private business
  • You’re preparing to sell or close a business
  • You want to simplify your estate or exit strategy
  • You’re looking for a tax-smart way to support a cause you care about

How it works:

  • Speak with your financial advisor, or we can connect you with one of our recommended professionals familiar with this type of charitable gift
  • Once you’ve made a decision, notify Lauren Knudsen at lknudsen@hbfdenver.org so we can support the next steps
