Meet Joe – 2019 Blitz Build Recipient

Following a quadruple bypass surgery, Joe’s health began to deteriorate.  He eventually became wheelchair bound and struggled getting around his home and also in and out of his home to get to doctor’s appointments.  Joe learned about the Home Builders Foundation, a metro-Denver based nonprofit that builds independence for those living with disabilities through home modifications. He applied for assistance and was visited by staff and volunteers to assess the project. From there, HBF began sourcing a Project Captain to complete the work. Richmond American Homes stepped in first, to help HBF with enlarging and making accessible the main floor bathroom and converting a den to a bedroom for Joe. That project, valued at $25,000, was completed in early June.

The final modification for Joe is a ramp to his home. This time, HBF will provide a Project Captain to lead a crew of volunteers, as part of the HBF’s 9th Annual Blitz Build. The Blitz Build will bring together more than 200 volunteers to build 25 ramps across metro Denver – including Joe’s in Castle Rock – over three days. Each Blitz Build recipient has a unique situation that led them to need a ramp, just like Joe.

Upon completion of the ramp, Joe’s safety and independence will have been increased so he can focus on his wellness journey, including independently getting to doctors’ appointments, picking up groceries from the store and, overall, “living a normal life, again”. Please consider donating today to help the HBF continue to provide accessible home modifications for individuals with a physical disability throughout the year.
